This is an interesting technique that I find in some book from MSU library. I think it can help me to teach new sentence pattern to the students. I am sure that it must have benefit for you, too.
The 3/3/3 followed by the 1/1/1 Formula
The system is as follows. Let us assume that the teacher wishes to teach a 'new' sentence pattern, e.g. The book is there.
The teacher, after placing his kit material in the 'there' position, faces the class and begins the presentation.
1. The teacher points at the first object in the 'there' position and says:
The book is there. (3 time)
2. The teacher then points at the second object and says:
The pen is there. (3 time)
3. The teacher now points at the third and says:
The box is here. (3 time)
Note: At this stage, the 3/3/3 part of the formula has ended.
4. Now, the teacher goes back to the first object and says:
The book is there. (once)
5. The second object is dealt with similarly:
The pen is there. (once)
6. And the third:
The box is there. (once)
Note: The 1/1/1 part of the formula has ended.
7. The teacher at this stage gets the learners to point at the first object and they begin the drill with:
The book is there. (once)
The drill is carried on with the other substitution objects in the 'new' sentence pattern:
e.g. The pen is there. (once)
The box is there. (once)
The .... is there. (once)
The teacher has therefore establish a set system for the teaching and the drilling of the 'new' sentence pattern through the formula: 3/3/3 followed by the 1/1/1.
